Golden era of The Gypsies is over The Singer and the Song gone silent…forever

Yes, it’s an irreparable loss to the showbiz world – the demise of singer/entertainer/showman/composer Sunil Perera.

His death, last morning (06), came as a terrible shock to the whole of Sri Lanka…and the world over, who loved this wonderful entertainer.

True, Sunil was down with the Covid virus and spent many days, in hospital, but when he, eventually, got home, there was happiness all around, and everyone was looking forward to seeing Sunil make a quick recovery.

Unfortunately, it didn’t work out that way, and last Thursday night (02), he had to be rushed to hospital, after experiencing some discomfort, and difficulty in breathing.

Sadly, Sunil Perera is no more in the land of the living and everyone is mourning his death.

In fact, Sunil hnd grandeur plans to celebrate The Gypsies 50th anniversary, this year, and we were planning to meet up to discuss details of the celebrations which was going to take the form of a mega concert, etc.

Sunil was outspoken and brave and brought into his songs a kind of novelty that everybody loved.

I believe his biggest hit was ‘Kurumitto.’ And his other fun songs included ‘Sudu None, ‘Lunu Dehi,’ ‘Ojaye,’ ‘Hina Hina,’’Piti Kotapan None,’ ‘ Linda Langa Sangamaya,’ ‘Uncle Johonson,’ and ‘Kottamali.’

The tributes that poured in, no sooner his death was announced, is a testimony to the popularity of this great performer…and human being.

He never owned a mobile phone, and preferred travelling by taxi, than having his own vehicle.

This is what some of the known personalities had to say about Sunil:

Shocked and saddened by the news. Legendary entertainer and all round nice guy. He will be remembered for more than his talent as a singer, entertainer and fantastic composer of some of Sri Lanka’s memorable songs. He has groomed and helped numerous musicians make the big time, including the late Ronnie Leitch. A very helpful, loveable man. May his soul rest in peace. Our condolences to his family.
